‘k Heb al veel over AC/DC gebracht lately. Terecht, want ik vind ze goed en ik luister er veel naar. Maar ik mag die andere grote band – een totaal andere stijl weliswaar – niet vergeten. Bij deze.

Wellicht een van de beste songs ooit geschreven, in my humble opinion, obviously, is Sultans of Swing, van Dire Straits, tegenwoordig jammer genoeg a.k.a. Mark Knopfler.

De versie die ik er hier uit Youtube uitpik, is een aardigheidje, die je niet op een live album zal vinden. Namelijk de versie gespeeld op het Nelson Mandela tribute concert in Wembley in 1988. Met tricky little inside left stand-in Eric Clapton himself op de – nu ja – rhythm guitar. Where legends meet dus. Een volgende keer pik ik er een nummer uit waar Clapton zijn solisten werk mag toevoegen aan een Dire Straits nummer.

O ja, niet vergeten. Sultans of Swing is een van die lange nummers die je moet uithoren tot het einde. Durf ze nu niet af te breken!
